Intro To Psychology Is Necessary In Establishing A Framework Before Advancing In The Program

Introduction to Psychology is a course that many students in universities across the country take during their college career. This course will allow students to discover a more sophisticated view of human behavior. Psychology is a very vast area of study, but this course brings together bits and pieces of all types of psychology, allowing students to get a broad view of the field.

Goals and skills
There are many skills that individuals who take Introduction to Psychology will learn. The first type of skill is writing. Writing is important in almost every type of career, but in psychology the writing is very specific. Students will learn how to analyze and read journal articles to prepare them to write articles themselves. They will experience scientific writing and learn to use the scientific method in the field of psychology.

Another skill that students will learn is to understand the basics of the field. Without understanding the core of psychology, students will not be able to grasp more complex ideas. Examples include differentiating between different types of psychologists, defining basic psychology terminology, and understanding the history of the field.

Students will also learn to understand the methods that psychologists use to understand behavior. Ethics will be discussed in Introduction to Psychology and the way that ethics played a part in the history of psychology. They will gain an introductory level of understanding in various fields of psychology, such as biological, perceptual, neurological, cognitive, abnormal and social.

Who takes Introduction to Psychology
This course can be taken by anyone at the university. Because this course is an introductory course, many schools offer this class to incoming freshman students. However, this course is not only geared toward younger students, it can also be taken by upperclassman as well.

Psychology majors or minors must take this course. They are required to take it before taking any other psychology class. By taking this class first, psychology majors and minors are able to understand the field of psychology from a broad perspective before taking more specific psychology courses. This course must be passed with the required grade for advancement to other areas in the psychology program.

This course is also offered as an elective option to students not in the psychology major or minor program. Some students take this class as a requirement for another program, and others take this solely as an elective. Because this course is a base level introduction, no prior knowledge of psychology is required before taking Introduction to Psychology. Students in the fields of sociology, communication, and business tend to take this course as an elective during their years in college.
